Sati Kund Haridwar – The Sacred Legend of Goddess Sati

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, married Lord Shiva against her father’s wishes. When Daksha organized a grand Yajna and deliberately insulted Lord Shiva, Sati was unable to bear the humiliation of her husband and sacrificed herself in the sacred fire.

Overwhelmed by grief and anger, Lord Shiva carried Sati’s body and wandered across the universe. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to divide Sati’s body into sacred parts, which fell at different places across the Indian subcontinent. These holy locations became known as the Shakti Peethas.

It is believed that the heart and navel of Goddess Sati fell at the site of Maya Devi Temple, making it one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in India.

The Goddess
Goddess Maya Devi is worshipped as an incarnation of Adi Shakti. The main idol depicts the Goddess with multiple arms, symbolizing divine power, protection, and the fulfillment of devotees’ wishes. The sanctum also houses forms of Goddess Kali and Goddess Kamakhya, representing different manifestations of Shakti.
